Frustration for drivers in the St. Johns Town Center will continue for at least the next year with the major construction projects underway. The town center is going through major expansion to include more shopping and dining options, but with an already packed shopping center, drivers worry traffic will become a bigger problem than it already is.
The new area will be called Town Center Promenade and in the plans includes the construction of the newest Ikea to hit Florida. Because of the major draw of that store alone, the Florida Department of Transportation are adding express lanes to I-295 at Town Center Parkway to accommodate traffic. Those express lanes are currently under construction, but the anticipated completion date has been pushed back due to delays with Hurricane Matthew. The popular Swedish furniture store is expected to be completed this fall.
Drivers are already feeling the pinch when it comes to traffic at the Town Center due to the more than 100 stores, restaurants and apartments that are already there, in addition to the recent opening of the popular event venue Top Golf. Motorists hope FDOT’s plan of adding express lanes can ease some of the congestion, and they are looking to the developers to help with parking needs as the Town Center grows.
